The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust: Guardians of East Africa’s Heritage

The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT) is dedicated to safeguarding the iconic ecosystems and rich biodiversity of the Tsavo-Amboseli ecosystem, achieving conservation success through initiatives that empower and directly benefit the local Maasai communities.

Established in the year 2000 by visionaries Luca and Antonella Belpietro, MWCT is now under the esteemed leadership of UNEP Champion of the Earth, Samson Parashina, with the acclaimed actor and environmentalist and UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity, Edward Norton serving as its President.

The Trust’s efforts in harmonizing community-led conservation were globally recognized when it received the prestigious Equator Prize from the UNDP at Rio+20 in 2012.

In a world turning towards indigenous wisdom, the Maasai are pivotal guardians of ecological gems, tasked with the monumental role of preserving the vast grasslands and wildlife while upholding their venerable culture. The challenges are immense, but MWCT embodies a beacon of hope and innovation—a collaborative model where seasoned conservationists and spirited Maasai leaders work together to demonstrate that wise ecosystem management can lead to prosperity and sustainability for the community.

Strategically positioned between Tsavo, Chyulu and Amboseli National Parks, the land owned by the Maasai hosts vital wildlife corridors, carbon-storing forests, and watersheds essential to over seven million people, including those in Kenya’s second-largest city, Mombasa.

Through the Trust, impactful Education, Health, and Conservation programs are funded and implemented, fostering sustainable economic gains from this harmonious coexistence with nature.

The journey of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust is not just about conservation; it’s about inspiring a movement where community welfare and environmental stewardship pave the way for a future where both people and wildlife flourish.

Your stay at our lodges contributes a $125 conservation fee per day. All net proceeds of the lodges are used for MWCT programs and community benefits.
