Kenya Safari – What to Wear!

Packing for a safari can feel a little daunting, you’ll hear about all kinds of restrictions, like luggage limits, and it has to be soft-shelled (no frames or rigid structures). And though your tour operator will send you packing tips after you book, here are a few tips we think will be essential to making sure you’re ready for every situation without going overboard. We hope to ease your mind about what to wear on safari in Kenya for all months.

What clothes to wear on safari in Kenya:

  • Pack minimal and lightweight (earth-toned clothing, wearing black will feel quite warm if you’re travelling in the height of the dry season)
  • We provide laundry service so packing 3-4 outfits should do the trick
  • It’s always good to pack a windbreaker or fleece for the evening drives or drinks outside by the fire at Tembo House
  • If you plan on staying a vehicle most of the time, you can pack shorts for those hot afternoons.
  • A bandana is a good item to have when dipped in cold water to help give a refreshing cool touch to a hot day on your neck.
  • Bringing a hat/scarf is always good for those evening drives back to camp from a sundowner
  • Planning on hiking? Pack a pair of lightweight hiking boots with good tread.

Some must haves include:

  • Flip flops for the pool or in house/tent use
  • Comfortable sneakers or sandals for those easy walking days
  • Plain t-shirts and button ups so you can layer up or down
  • Long-sleeves for layering in the evening
  • A bathing suit for those post-safari pool dips!

What not to pack on Safari:

For environmental reasons, plastic bags are illegal and have been banned so we recommend carrying any of your items in reusable bags or luggage. Let’s do our part to keep our planet clean and safe for everyone!
